Question: What accounts for the different colors of tornado?

Answer: The visible column is composed of water droplets formed by condensation in the funnel. The color depends on how much light is able to get through the cloud it is forming from, and the dust and debris that gets picked up. Some smaller tornados are not visible until they get near the ground and pick up dust/dirt.
