I-440 ramp reopened after concrete blockage

The ramp leading from inbound Wade Avenue onto the Interstate 440 Inner Beltline was closed for several hours Tuesday after a large piece of precast concrete fell off of a tractor-trailer, Raleigh Police Department spokesman Jim Sughrue said.

The truck overturned while its driver was attempting to navigate the on-ramp. The truck also blew a tire.

At least one lane was closed as equipment was brought in to clear the scene. By 2 p.m., all lanes and the ramp had reopened to traffic.

No injuries were reported and no vehicles were damaged.

Police charged the driver, James Edward Scherffios, of Campobello, S.C., with failure to secure the load, according to the police report. The truck is owned by Tindall Haul and Erect Corp. in Spartanburg, S.C.
