By now you may have seen brochures for things like wrapping paper, cookies or scented pencils in your work place. It's fund raising season for PTAs. You can see details about how different schools go about it in a story I just did. But here's some information that didn't make the story.
In Wake County, PTAs are required to provide three programs or services to the school for every one fundraiser they hold. Without the PTAs and their fundraisers many enrichment programs at local schools would be lost. Many schools bring the symphony into their schools with PTA money. At Ligon Middle School, for example, teachers get $100 to help them with needed supplies. Teachers can also apply for mini grants of up to $350 for projects they want to do in their classes.
Most PTAs are very open to receiving donations instead of selling items. A lot of them also participate in passive fund raising like grocery card link to schools programs. But there are benefits to selling items. The president of the Farmington Woods PTA told me the kids get excited about it because there are incentives for them. They get prizes for the amount they sell. Also, a lot of people enjoy the wrapping paper, cookies and other items that only come this time of year.
