decorating ideas for halloween?

by Golo Managing Editor
Published Oct. 6, 2008

Does anyone out in GOLO land have any easy ideas for making fun Halloween decorations?

Maybe something that the kids can have fun with and that won't require parents to break the bank?  I saw a neighbor with the cobwebs on the porch, but so far all I have out is a glowing pumpkin and a big spider hanging on the door.

Do you plan to decorate? If so, share your vision.

i will put up a link of the outside decor once we get it close to finished---we usually have a 7ft gargoyle on the roof which usually gets a lot of attention!

I love to decorate but mine may break the bank--a link to a slideshow of my decor

Here's a picture of the ghost & witch using fake pumpkins: http://wwwcache.wral.com/asset/golo/2008/10/13/3728292/48f38aa6ba254-484x485.jpg

Javajoe: That's a great idea. I have two of those pumpkins. I am going to do that! Thanks for sharing. -Angela

When I was a kid, we would take a balloon and cover it with an old sheet or pillowcase (or some other white cloth), then draw a face on it and hang it from the trees.

One year, I got really creative. We had a couple of those light-up fake pumpkins, so I placed one on a stool. Then I wrapped a black cape around it, topped it off with one of those witch's hats with the hair sewn in, and added shoes coming out from the cape for a nice touch. It looked like a short witch standing on the porch, and it was just the height of trick-or-treaters.

I did the same thing with another light-up pumpkin. Placed it on a stool, covered it with a sheet and that was all -- at night, the face from the light-up pumpkin would shine through the sheet to make the eyes and mouth glow.

cobwebs are cheap and easy. But don't limit them to your door/porch..if you have a long driveway, place them around railings, or fences, trees, and then have the kids place real leaves, (they're free), in them. It gives a good creepy effect before the trick or treaters even get to your door. Have the kids use green, black or red paint to paint "Warning signs" and post them around the yard or house.."Evil Lurks", "Beware"..stuff like that. Get a cheap cassett of halloween sound effects, and play it thru the window during the evening of Halloween. I've actually scared some big kids out of their shoes, when a wolf started howling, and they couldn't see where it was coming from. LOL

Take some older clothes, flannel, sweatshirts, pants are perfect. Stuff them with leaves and use them for scarecrows. You can use pumpkins for heads, or no heads at all, lay them around the yard. One year the kids and I took a lot of small pumpkins, and cut simple little eyes in them, and lit them with tea candles, and set them up near tree bases. It looked like scary, little ceatures hiding behind trees when it was dark.

I'm thinking of just hanging up my 401k statement... can't get any scarier than that.

On the peanut angle- are people that are allergic to peanuts also allergic to all nuts? Just wondering, don't know anyone with peanut allergies to ask.

Good point, randy. That's a great reminder. You should blog that info on Halloween morning.
