teachers: what is the biggest problem you face with today's parents?

Alright teachers, let's hear it! What are today's parents doing that seems to be driving you nuts? Not all of us are model parents by any means, so give it to us straight.
We will talk about what parents are doing "right" in another blog. This is a space for you to tell it like it is.

You are exactly right. I teach in a very low income area, and most of my students have parents that are not highly educated. They do not attempt to control their children, but they expect me to be able to do so.

In my day, if a student acted up at school, he/she would be punished there and get a second dose at home. Those days are mostly gone.

When my son was in first grade, he had to stay inside for several days in a row because some of the kids were talking. I couldn't hold my tongue anymore. I told my son what I thought about it and what I'd do if I was the teacher. He promptly went back to school and said, "My mommy said..." I could have died! Learned to just mumble under my breath after that. I should have added that my son has never gotten in trouble at school, ever. He's almost like a Stepford child at school. He knows whatever punishment was at school is nothing compared to home. So, I hate when he doesn't get to play because of other students.

I absolutely HATE group punishment. I quiz my son every afternoon after he gets home from school. I want to know what he learned, how was lunch, what he played at playtime, everything. I do not accept a shrug of an answer either. What I found was when I asked him what he did at playtime, he'd say that they didn't go outside because so-and-so couldn't line up quietly. That makes me so mad.
Being a teacher, I punish the ones that get in trouble and never punish the class for a few. The ones that had a rough day have to walk laps. They can take a rest, but then have to walk more. This gives them punishment and exercise. Usually the last 10 or 5 minutes, I give them time to join the class. I teach 7 year olds, so some forgiveness is appropriate :) That's my parent pet peeve!

I heard that alot from my 2 older sons when they were in middle school. It was like too many days the teachers were just happy to get through the day without any fights, forget the teaching. I understand how frustrating that has to be for the teachers. But I think the problem, in my particular middle school, goes back to the administration. My childre, because they come from a "good home", were punished quickly for the smallest of infractions (which they should be, don't get me wrong) but the ones that were a constant disruption were not because "you have to understand, they have a difficult life as it is"...teach them responsibility NOW, give the teachers the support they need to TEACH, and some of these problems will stop

I think teachers should have more power to eliminate distractions from their classrooms. My son has come home and said that a particlar class was wasted because someone was having a behavior issue. If it is mine, let me know. We will fix it.
Teachers that are doing their jobs ARE underpaid. Others are overpaid for the job they do - no different from any other profession.
What about the testing ? I haven't seen any comments on that.
I think we are preaching to the choir. If I had teachers that do some of the things you teachers have posted, I would be pretty happy.
