Chapel Hill, N.C. — UNC-Chapel Hill’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication will be one of five “ABC News of Campus” bureaus being established by the ABC network.
The bureau will be staffed by UNC students. ABC will provide financial support, but specifics were not disclosed. The network also will provide equipment and editing software.
The bureau will open in September.
Students, including a bureau chief, will be paid by ABC. Student Carly Swain will be the bureau chief. Dave Cupp, an assistant professor at UNC, will be the faculty adviser.
Content produced by the students could be broadcast on a variety of ABC news and program outlets.
“These college digital bureaus will extend the newsgathering reach of ABC News throughout the country,” said ABC News President David Westin in a statement. “In addition, they will enable us to nurture bright young journalism students, giving them hands-on training from some of the most seasoned news professionals in the business and opportunities to see their work appear on ABC News’ platforms.”
ABC also will establish bureaus at Arizona State, the University of Florida, Syracuse University and the University of Texas at Austin.
