Epic Games launches subsidiary in Korea
Epic Games, developer of multi-million copy selling hits “Gears of War” and its sequel as well as the Unreal game franchise and the Unreal game development engine, is expanding its international footprint with a subsidiary in Korea.
Epic Games Korea will focus on licensing of the Unreal game engine and related services for game developers in Korea. The Unreal engine is one of the most popular in use across multiple platforms and by numerous companies.
The Korea subsidiary will be directed by Ray Park, a former executive at Massive and Sony Computer Entertainment Korea.
Jack Porter, a former Unreal engine programmer who worked for Epic before moving to Korea in 2003, also will work for the new Korean group.
“Epic has been providing Unreal Engine technology to the Korean market for over five years, with the simple goal of helping our customers make better games,” said Jay Wilbur, Epic’s vice president for business development. “We are now expanding our commitment to the Korean game industry by opening a local subsidiary, hosting a third of our global licensing resources, to serve as a hub for Unreal Engine access, knowledge and support in the Korean marketplace.”
