WUNC radio general manager to lead Council for Entrepreneurial Development

Research Triangle Park, N.C. — Joan Siefert Rose, general manager at WUNC-FM radio, is the new president of the Council for Entrepreneurial Development..

The board of directors for the non-profit organization picked Rose at a meeting Wednesday afternoon. She replaces Monica Doss, who led the CED for more than 22 years. Her appointment was announced after the meeting.

Doss steps down as of May 31. She disclosed her intention to resign in February.

Rose is a familiar face to the CED, having served as a member of the CED board over the past four years.

“We are excited that Joan will be joining CED to carry the organization through its next 25 years and we are grateful to Monica Doss for 22 years building and creating the great foundation upon which we will go forward,” said CED board chair Mary Musacchia, in a prepared statement. “Joan’s strengths in collaboration and great connection to the Research Triangle community will help CED spread its message.”

In hiring Rose, the CED selected an executive with experience in fund-raising. One of Doss’ most significant accomplishments at CED was raising funds through two “Innovation to Impact” campaigns.

Rose joined WUNC in February 2001 after a four-year tenure as program director at Michigan Radio, the public radio service of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.

WUNC, which brands itself as North Carolina Public Radio, is the public radio service of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and one of the major stations of the National Public Radio network.

At WUNC, she spearheaded an aggressive expansion program ranging from the building of a new studio in Durham at the American Tobacco Historical District to more original programming.

“I am excited about this opportunity to take an important organization to the next level,” Rose said. “The Research Triangle benefits from a robust climate for business innovation, and CED has been at the center of it for nearly 25 years. This is the perfect time to look ahead to the next 25 years promoting and expanding entrepreneurship in our region.”

Before moving into management, Rose was a reporter and anchor at several stations, including WPTF in Raleigh and WBT in Charlotte as well as WJR in Detroit.

A winner of a George Foster Peabody Award, Rose earned an undergraduate degree in sociology and anthropology at Middlebury College. She also received a master's degree in public health at the University of Michigan.

The CED is one of the nation’s oldest and largest organizations for entrepreneurs, having been founded in 1984. It has more than 5,000 members.
