Zipit Wireless to Roll Out New WiFi Instant Messaging Device

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Zipit Wireless, a startup that has developed instant messaging devices that utilize wireless fidelity (WiFi) networks, is rolling out a new product.

The Zipit Wireless Messenger 2, or Z2, provides users instant messaging capability without having to utilize a computer or cell phone. No monthly fees are required since the Z2 is designed to use WiFi networks in homes or free WiFi “hot spots” such as those at retail establishments.

Zipit, which launched in 2004, recently closed on $4.5 million in venture financing.

Z2 also works with all major instant messaging platforms, including AOL, Yahoo and MSN. The device also can play music and offers an optional portable memory device called a mini-SD. The Z2 can also played streamed music over the networks. Users can also view photos.

The company also has added features such as games, backgrounds and other content at its Web site.

Zipit is targeting the more than 16 million teens that use instant messaging.

The Z2 augments the company’s original Messenger. It will cost $149.99. Orders will be accepted beginning October 1.
