RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – RTI International will spearhead development of safe water and sanitation projects in the African country of Senegal over the next five years with a $21 million grant from the U.S. Agency for International Development.

In one area targeted for the project, only 17 percent of the population had accessed to improved sanitation facilities.

“By fostering the growth of local service providers, using low-cost technologies, and community-driven planning and management, RTI will introduce a sustainable approach to providing these essential services in remote areas,” said Alan Wyatt, the RTI project manager.

RTI and its partners will seek to develop local businesses to manufacture drilling tools, water pumps, latrine slabs and to provide related construction and drilling services.
