Emory’s cancer institute receives National Cancer Institute designation
The Winship Cancer Institute at Emory University received the National Cancer Institute Cancer Center designation on Monday.
The highly sought designation means additional federal funding, more clinical trials and new technologies.
Winship is one of 64 such centers across the country. The list also includes The Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center at UNC-Chapel Hill, the Duke Comprehensive Center and the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Wake Forest University.
Emory’s center will receive nearly $4.3 million in funding over the next three years for use in expanded research.
"This designation is a tremendous honor and a reflection of the hard work and dedication that is exhibited by faculty and staff throughout the Emory system," says Brian Leyland-Jones, executive director of Winship. “The designation enables us to continue to develop research initiatives that will result in new therapies for patients throughout Georgia and beyond."
