RTI International wins $34M renewal of EPA contract
RTI International will continue to analyze air pollution information from across the U.S. under terms of a five-year contract with the Environmental Protection Agency.
The renewal is worth $34 million, according to an RTI spokesperson.
RTI analyzes air filters from more than 180 communities as part of the program. The effort is focused on fine particle air pollution. The particulate matter is small enough to enter small airways in the respiratory system and have been linked to ailments such as asthma.
"Identifying the specific compounds on a filter sample can help to pinpoint sources of pollution," said R.K.M. Jayanty, a senior fellow at RTI who is the project’s director. "By measuring the mass of particulate matter present we also assist in determining whether an area is attaining air-pollution reduction goals or not."
RTI has worked with EPA on the pollution monitoring project since 1999.
